Dear magical_m (16),
Ten tips for making the next 22 years go a bit more smoothly:
1. Perms. Don't do it. Really. Don't. The photos will be around forever. Also, advise your brother against the permed mullet. He won't listen to you, but give it a go anyway.
2. Be nice to your parents. Ask questions about their life before they had you. They won't be around for as long as you think and you might not get the chance to ask them all you want to.
3. Cole Porter was right. There really IS no cure like travel to help you unravel the worries of living today. Get into it early.
4. Languages. Learn a couple. Get fluent. They'll be the biggest asset you have when you're overseas and decide you want to live there.
5. Don't do a business degree just to please your dad. He means well, but there's actually nothing wrong with doing an arts degree. And if you want to choose 18th Century English Literature and History then do it - you might as well study something you love. Worry about the career possibilities later.
6. Emma Thompson has it right:
"When he says he doesn't love you, believe him. He doesn't."
Really. He doesn't.
7. One day the right one will be right there in front of you. He's just a bit shy is all. As are you. Get over your shyness and he'll get over his. You won't have long, so make the most of it.
8. Keep your eyes open and follow your instincts. You're usually right.
9. Don't be put off by that evil piano teacher Mrs Williams who used to rap you over the knuckles with a ruler. Find a better teacher and keep at it. The piano will be one of your greatest comforts when you're down.
10. Those evil girls who are tormenting you now will be knocked up straight out of school, get fat and subsequently be dumped by the blokes who knocked them up. They'll end up on benefits and have miserable lives. It's called karma. Just keep being you and ignore them... you're destined for better.
Love ya!

PS - Patsy Kensit isn't as dumb as you think.

#6. What if some days you do, more than others, and other days, not as much?
Also you jogged my memory regd Michael Gambon. He was terrific is The Singing Detective. Or the series was fantastic and he was in it. Either way.
Oh yes, Dennis Potter's masterpiece. Loved that series. My dad had the album.
The movie with Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jnr was pants. And it hurts me to say that RDJ was pants because I think he's ace.
Have you seen A Scanner Darkly. I thought RD Jr was v personable in that.
He is one of the few actors which I always have time for.

Actor in a supporting role: Robert Downey Jr., "A Scanner Darkly"
Of course Downey has made a career out of oddball supporting roles, and one could argue that nearly all of them (in recent years) play off his disordered personal history. But with Barris, the thoroughly untrustworthy slacker alpha-idiot of Richard Linklater's animated cult-classic-to-be, Downey digs deeper into the life of a drug addict than he ever has in any live-action role. Charismatic, duplicitous and a know-it-all with a highly inflated sense of his own competence, Barris will remind you (or anyway he reminded me) of that college friend you knew was bad news but couldn't resist. What is it actually like to get high with Bob Downey? Now we know.

Yes, I think that was probably the best thing he'd done since Less Than Zero... and he's been on the up again ever since.
