Freo...

I was asked by a Freo supporter to pray to the football gods that his team would beat the Pies today. Yesterday the gods weren't listening to me, but today they cut me some slack. Although there were a few occasions in the dying minutes of the final quarter when I got butterflies...

Well done boys - you deserve that top eight berth. And Pavlich, I hope your hip is ok.

Another game, another season gone...

It wasn't quite the flogging I expected though... we kept them to 48 points. The Eagles kicking was shocking - 25 behinds. That made me happy.

Fraser bloody Gehrig kicking 7 goals in the Saints flogging of the Demons didn't impress me though - he's now 1 ahead of Williams on the goal kicking table... our boy having been held to only 2 goals. Hopefully he'll do better against the Lions next week and Gehrig will be kept goal-less by the Cats.

I have to say though that my biggest disappointment was not being able to find anywhere to watch the game - not having Foxtel is starting to take its toll. Thank god for Fays and his Vodafone - sms updates every 5 mins. You rock my world. Oh and well done on the Knights. At least one of us tasted victory this week.

Things that made me smile today...

* An email from my best friend, with the scan of her unborn baby attached (even in the womb, Mini-Fini is very cute!);

* Getting a big hug from my other best friend, who I haven't spent nearly enough time with lately;

* Being complimented by a customer at work tonight (who told me I was a lovely person);

* Leaving work tonight knowing I don't have to work tomorrow;

* Getting on the bus home and seeing another friend and finding out she now lives just near me (hurrah!);

* Walking past the park in my street and seeing a tiny puppy playing catch with its owner (and having her bound over and let me pat her was even better!);

* Continuing to walk down my street and hearing Denice Williams' "Let's Hear It For The Boy" blaring from a house about a block away from mine;

* Seeing my mum's team (Bombers) win by 13 points... which means she'll be in a good mood and probably send me a care package of mars bar slice and Haigh's chocolate frogs... yummmmmm.

Yes, today was a good day. I hope that tomorrow is even better and that a divine miracle occurs and the Hawks win by 50 points.

Stuff...

I saw Stuff Happens last night. Top play. Top writing. Top acting... albiet with one or two slightly dodgy accents (I lived in the States for a bit - I'm picky on accents).

There are those I heard muttering last night, that at just over 3 hours (3 hours 10 mins to be exact), it's too long. To them I say "No Ticker" and do a little hand tap gesture against my heart (those of you who know me, know this gesture... explain it to the rest).

Brave the 3 hours. Go see it. Before it sells out.

Boys. Let's talk personal hygiene.

Or to be more specific, let's talk smell. As in after-shave/cologne/body spray - call it what you will.

The cute boy moving to join my queue in the supermarket this afternoon caught my attention. Tall, light brown hair that flopped in his eyes, quirky dresser, nice smile... on first impressions he looked just my type. Then he moved close enough for me to notice his smell. If my groceries hadn't already hit the checkout conveyer, I would have moved to another checkout. Cheap, nasty, offensive, oversprayed Lynx (I'm guessing). Put me off completely.

This has to stop boys. Smell is important.

And contrary to popular male myth, its not a waste of money. Yes, most of the girls I know do spend a good deal of their income on products that make them smell good. But you boys appreciate that don't you? Really, how many of you like stinky girls? Sorry - can't see any hands raised there. And we girls know that you shouldn't skimp on the important things... personally, its Thierry Mulger Angel or its nothing. And we girls also know that you don't have to spend a week's rent on perfume when there are great places like Ebay where you can pick up good perfume at a fraction of the store price.

Now I'm not saying you boys have to go and spend a fortune on expensive cologne. Just please stop buying that cheap supermarket crap. Sometimes all you need is a decent soap. I'm a sucker for boys who have that "just stepped out of the shower" smell.

And here's an idea - take a girl with you when you're trying or buying that stuff. Most of us have a decent sense of smell and will be (sometimes brutally) honest with what smells good on you and what doesn't. I will happily offer my services to any boy who admits he needs help. All I ask in return is a ritual dumping of the aforementioned offensive products and a promise to never purchase them again. Oh and maybe a few glasses of red whilst watching AFL. If you're cute. And you make me laugh. And you know your footy. I know you exist. But maybe you already smell good. Anyway, that's not today's topic.

Finally, to that boy at the supermarket this afternoon - who will probably never read this - yes, I thought you were cute. But you smell. Bad. Sort it out.

Remakes. Over 'Em.

Can I just say (and I can, cos this is my blog and if you don't want to read it I ain't forcin ya), that I am sick to death of all these bloody remakes of old films or TV shows. Example:

Having finished work early the other day and feeling in need of some mindless entertainment (and my new work premises being just a short stroll from Broadway), I decided to pop along to Hoyts and see what they had on offer.

Now, I know I could have walked in the other direction (towards my house), stopped off at the Dendy and seen something of a decent quality, but I'd had a shit day at work and my brain wasn't in the mood to be enriched. I needed trash. I'm a Gemini. I need trash every now and again.

However what I don't need at 2.30pm on a weekday, is a choice of the following pieces of shit:

  • House of Wax
  • Herbie: Fully Loaded
  • Bewitched
  • War of the Worlds

I could have seen House of Wax, but the thought of Paris Hilton being employed as an actress sends shudders through my very core. As a vacuous yet amusing party girl, I'm there for her. I even quite like her at times. Someone has to be on the worst dressed list and take care of that ugly chiuaua type rat she calls a dog (sorry Paris, but dogs who want to be called dogs must be bigger than a tote bag). But as someone who waltzes into the profession I have slogged my guts out to succeed in (through years of training and more co-ops and castings than I care to recall) - even if it is in a remake of a dodgy horror film - well I'm sorry, but piss off Paris. Go back to the social pages. I like seeing you there. Its where you belong.

I could have seen War of the Worlds. But every time I see Tom Cruise of late I want to punch his head in for all his stupid comments and insane mid-life-crisis behaviour. Seriously Tom, just buy a fucking Harley and take yourself off on a roadtrip along Route 66 and shag every girl and/or boy you meet along the way. Take lots of drugs, drink lots of beer and get into a bar fight or seven. Just stop dragging that insipid Katie Holmes along the red carpet like she's the next Nicole Kidman. She's not. Nic (despite the fact I don't personally like her as an actress) has some poise and class. Katie will never overcome her Dawson's Creek level of mediocrity.

Then there was Herbie. I considered it. After all, I liked Mean Girls. It didn't take itself too seriously. And Lindsay was ok. But the thought of watching Matt Dillon's once impressive career (Tex, The Outsiders, The Flamingo Kid - all quality examples of 80s teen flicks) plummet to the depths of Disney's bullshit moral preachy canyon of bad character choices didn't endear me to it. Were you really that desperate for the money Matt?

So that left Bewitched. But I'm over TV remakes. Even if they do have Shirley Maclaine. I'm just not interested. Sorry Nic, you may shit all over Katie Holmes, but you'll never be as warm and funny and endearing as Elizabeth Montgomery. She had magic.

So after all that deliberation (which took about 30 seconds) I went and saw Sin City for the second time. Fuck that's a quality piece of film making.

Although the money-spinning-remake-wanker-hollywood-mogul types did get me in the end by making me suffer through previews of The Dukes of Hazard and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory... my message to them is simple:

Go see Sin City. Take notes. That's how you do it.

And don't think you can better the original cos you can't. Just ask George Lucas.

(Although if anyone is planning a remake of The Princess Bride, my hand is way up in the air to play Buttercup. I'll even dye my hair).

Next time I might just save my money and come home and watch Oprah.

If Your Team's Not Playing, Who Should You Support?

So today I went to the Swans vs West Coast game. A lovely guy I work with who clearly comes from a wealthy background and is now slumming it in the arts sector gave my friends and I gold member's passes. Those things probably cost the equivalent of my year's rent - bless his cottons for offering them to us. It was just a pity we couldn't find a fucking seat... how many people have those things?? People who wear suits to the football, that's who. Wankers.

Anyway, I was with two Swans supporters (and I use that term loosely as they clearly have no idea about the rules of AFL, wouldn't know a drop-kick from a disposal, arrived late and left mid-way through the last quarter) and a West Coast supporter. She has the cap. She knows the rules. She knows her team song. She stayed right to the final siren despite her team losing. That's commitment.

I know about commitment. I have been a Hawthorn supporter for as long as I can remember.
Don't laugh at me.
My father was a Hawthorn supporter. So was his father. Its in our blood. I would never leave before the final siren, even if (sorry, when) we are losing. I know that one day we will return to the glorious form which has not been seen since the 1980s. I have faith. Anyway, we won this week. It doesn't matter that it was only against the bottom team... we have to take the victories where we can get them.

But that's not my question. My question is, since my team wasn't playing who should I barrack for? If it was anyone vs Collingwood it would be easy... I could never barrack for Collingwood. But then I probably wouldn't have gone to the game.
